Public Invited to Attend the Community Wildfire Protection Plan Community Meeting The City of Reno and the Reno Fire Department (RFD) invite residents to a community meeting to give input on an upcoming Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), in partnership with SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA). The meeting is happening on Thursday, May 29, at 6 p.m. at Reno City Hall’s Council Chambers. A CWPP is a plan designed to identify and mitigate wildfire hazards to communities and infrastructure located in the wildland-urban interface (WUI). The CWPP makes recommendations for hazardous fuels reduction, public outreach and education, structural ignitability reduction, and fire response capacity. The City of Reno has contracted SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) to develop the 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), which is an update to the 2005 CWPP. The draft CWPP is expected to be ready for public review in late fall 2025, with the final CWPP anticipated by winter 2025. The development of the City of Reno CWPP is based on facilitated collaboration among local, Tribal, state, and federal officials, as well as non-governmental stakeholders. The 2026 CWPP reviews, verifies, and/or identifies potential new priority areas where mitigation measures are needed to protect irreplaceable life, property, and critical infrastructure from wildfire. Whether you can attend the community meeting, everyone is invited to take the short community survey regarding the CWPP draft by taking the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) Community Survey on the Wildfires and Living in the Wildland Urban Interface page. All input will go to the planning team and the survey is open now until June 30, 2025. For more information on the CWPP, please contact Reno Fire Department Fire Inspector Talina Sky at SkyT@reno.gov or SWCA Project Manager Jayden Peterson at jayden.peterson@swca.com. In addition, please visit the Reno Fire Department’s Wildfires and Living in the Wildland Urban Interface page for updates and information regarding emergency preparedness, response, and recovery.
