We’re also excited to invite you to check out the Bike Safety Expo in BELIEVE Plaza on May 9, share the opening of the Adaptive Cycling Center on May 9, and celebrate excellence in local historic preservation at this year’s Historic Preservation Awards on May 14. These events are in collaboration with Reno Seniors EngAGED and recognizes the contributions of older adults by giving them opportunities to socialize and have fun. All events are free to attend. Read More (Via KTVN) City of Reno hosts Arbor Day celebration The City of Reno held its annual Arbor Day celebration Friday, April 24, at Teglia’s Paradise Park. Arbor Day is celebrated in Nevada on the last Friday of April each year and highlights the importance of trees, encouraging their planting and preservation. The City’s Urban Forestry team currently maintains over 29,000 publicly owned trees in City parks and along public streets. Other Things To Know Biggest Little Spring Cleaning If you have large items you need to get rid of during your spring cleaning, then make sure to bring them to a Biggest Little Spring Cleaning in your neighborhood! These free events are open to all Reno residents. Important: Only residential bulky waste will be accepted this spring. Unfortunately, due to the expense, we will NOT have electronic or hazardous waste disposal collection this season! The event will open at 9 a.m. and will continue until the Waste Management container bins are full (or 12 p.m. at the latest). The next one is in Ward 2 on Saturday, May 9, 2026 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Reno High School.  Find more dates and a list of accepted items The Bottom Line Reduced spending, increased revenues, and one-time savings lead to a balanced budget for FY27 Council received this month’s financial update, which included a review of the current fiscal year and highlighted a balanced proposed FY27 General Fund budget. The four major revenue sources in the General Fund are consolidated taxes, property taxes, franchise fees, and business licenses. Current estimates for FY26 show property taxes are on track. Consolidated taxes are projected at 4.7% above budget ($4.6 million), and business licenses at 6.3% above budget ($1.9 million). Franchise fees are projected at 7.8% below budget ($2.9 million), however, the higher revenues in the other areas are expected to make up the difference. Council directed the City Manager to work with staff to find ways to reduce spending. That direction is making a difference, with spending coming in lower than expected. Salaries and benefits are projected at 1.7% under budget (about $4.5 million in savings), and operating costs are estimated to be about 4.5% under budget (saving another $2.8 million). Altogether, the City anticipates roughly $7.3 million in savings this fiscal year. The proposed FY27 budget reflects this progress, with $335 million in resources and $335 million in proposed expenditures. The budget is balanced through a combination of these spending reductions, modest revenue increases, and the use of $4 million in one-time savings from FY26. The General Funds' ending balance is estimated at 16.8% for FY26 and 14.9% for FY27, consisting of about two months of operating costs. For any local government other than a school district, for the purposes of chapter 288 of NRS, a budgeted ending fund balance of not more than 16.67 percent of the total budgeted expenditures, less capital outlay, for a general fund, is not subject to negotiations with an employee organization; and must not be considered by a fact finder or arbitrator in determining the financial ability of the local government to pay compensation or monetary benefits. Many thanks to the Reno City Council, the City of Reno's Finance Director, and all City employees for the hard work required to balance the FY26 and FY27 budgets. The FY27 budget adoption is scheduled for the council meeting on May 20, 2026. Council will receive a full budget overview and review priorities beforehand at the May 6, 2026 council meeting.
