View as Webpage September 1, 2024 Reno Connect | Senior Connect Connecting Citizens to our Community   September 2024 Updates   Through the Reno Seniors EngAGED Programming, the City of Reno provides a diverse range of free events and activities tailored for seniors in our community. Explore the exciting events listed below! Senior Tech Connect Classes Are you interested in learning how to use your smartphone whether you have a iPhone or Android? The City of Reno is offering free technology classes sponsored by AARP to teach older adults basic and advance skills on how to use your smartphone in English and Spanish at various locations. Classes are two part series, attendance is required for both. There will be a variety of classes available at various locations. Choose the location that suits you best. September 25-26 from 5pm-6:30pm at Neil Road Recreation Center (3925 Neil Road). This class will be taught in Spanish. Kindly fill out this form. October 10-11 from 9am-10:30am at Evelyn Mount Northeast Center (1301 Valley Road). This class will be taught in Spanish. Kindly fill out this form. Kindly fill out this form. The AARP Community Challenge is a grant program to make tangible improvements in communities that jump-start long-term change. It is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods and rural areas to become great places to live for people of all ages. Poetry Workshop Free poetry workshops sponsored by the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, for seniors to unleash their creativity, discuss poetry and share your thoughts with each other! Monday, September 9, from 1pm-2pm Washoe County Senior Center, Conference Room (1155 Ninth Street). Dragon Lights Dragon Lights Reno returns to the enchanting setting of Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Rancho San Rafael Park. Through the Reno Seniors EngAGED programming, enjoy free admission to the Dragon Lights. Tickets are limited and at a first come, first serve basis, kindly fill out this form. October 16th anytime between 6pm-8:00pm Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens within Rancho San Rafael Park (1595 N Sierra Street) Free Line Dance Classes Join us for free line dance classes for seniors! Whether you are a beginner or experienced, come and have some fun while learning new moves, meeting new friends, and staying active. Every Monday from 1:30pm-3:00pm Evelyn Mount Northeast Center, Gym (1301 Valley Road) Budget Friendly Cooking Class Are you interested in a budget-friendly cooking class for seniors? Join us at the Elks Lodge to learn tips, tricks, and delicious recipes without breaking the bank. Classes will take place on the third Wednesday of every month at the Reno Elks Lodge (597 Kumle Lane) from September 2024-June 2025. Check out the class dates below and kindly fill out the forms to reserve your spot! Additional Community Events Senior Fest The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee is proud to sponsor Senior Spectrum's Senior Fest 2024! Senior Fest is a free event, featuring more than 50 vendors as part of an effort to connect seniors and caregivers to various services in our community. September 3 from 9am-2pm Reno Town Mall (4001 S. Virginia Street) Dementia Friendly Washoe County Community Group Meeting Help support your community in becoming more respectful, supportive, and inclusive with people living with dementia and their care partners. Thursday, September 5 from 1pm-2:30pm Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center (1301 Valley Road) Connections Central Connections bring people together for story-staring and meaningful conversation with much laughter sprinkled in. You will leave feeling uplifted, happy and more connected with others. First Friday of the month at 1pm Sparks Library (1125 12th Street, Sparks, NV) Better Business Bureau - Secure Your ID Day Better Business Bureau invites consumers and businesses to take part in Secure Your ID Day which provides free document shredding. Participants can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders, but staples, paper clips, CDs and floppy discs are accepted. October 12 from 9am to 11:30am (or until shred trucks are full) Atlantis Casino Resort Spa's, West Parking Lot Reno Food Systems Events Below are free workshops by Reno Food Systems! Community Garden Volunteer Opportunities Every Tuesday from 7am to 12pm at Paradise Park Community Garden at (2745 Elementary Drive) Every Wednesday from 7am to 8am at Reno Food Systems Community Garden at (3295 Mayberry Drive) Senior Friendly Community Garden Gathering Harvest produce for low-income seniors and sample farm fresh food! Sunday, September 8 from 8am to 10am Reno Food Systems Farm (3295 Mayberry Drive) Farmers Market Senior Friendly Shop Use your senior farmers market coupons and share a meal from the garden together. From sharing practical resources, to holding fun virtual activities and events, AARP is providing opportunities to connect and help build an even stronger Nevada.
