Hello Reno, Spring is picking up in the Biggest Little City, and with it comes a mix of opportunities to connect, support one another, and get ready for the months ahead. In this edition of the Reno Report, you’ll find information about a fraud awareness fair for seniors on April 9 at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center auditorium, designed to help protect older adults from scams and financial exploitation. You’ll also read more about efforts at Sierra Vista Park, where community members and the Parks and Recreation Department are working together to rebuild the park’s shelter after it was destroyed by arson in November 2024. Looking ahead to summer, Sierra Kids Summer Camp registration is now open for children ages 5 to 12, with camps starting June 15. We’re also excited to offer a new discount program for all Sierra Kids programs, including summer camps. This discount can be combined with the RecConnect program for those who qualify. To sign up, visit your nearest City of Reno recreation facility with a current pay stub or last year’s tax return. Visit the Parks page for more information on this program. And finally, I want to talk to you about something a little more serious. Families across Reno are navigating the challenges of a loved one experiencing substance use and mental health conditions, and it can often feel isolating and uncertain. On April 16, at Reno City Hall, the Behavioral Health Association of Nevada will host one of many free workshops titled “Resilience For Families: Navigating Substance Use and Mental Health Conditions.” This workshop is designed to provide support, resources, and guidance to help families better understand these challenges and how to support their loved ones. A lot is happening across Reno, and I hope you’ll take a moment to explore what’s included and see where you might want to get involved! Listen on Spotify Listen on Apple Podcasts City Updates City of Reno hosting fraud prevention event for seniors The City of Reno is hosting a fraud prevention event for senior in the area. The event will take place on April 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McKinley Arts and Culture Center auditorium. The event is free to attend. The Federal Trade Commission estimates total fraud losses by American seniors rose 400% between 2020 and 2024. Seniors are most commonly targeted by scams involving investments, romance, tech support, imposters and lottery schemes. Read More (Via KOLO) Reno Fire Department touts record-high responses, new partnerships in 2025 annual report Over 57,000 calls to duty throughout 2025, a record number for Chief Dave Cochran and the Reno Fire Department (RFD). "Job one is protecting the community, and to do that by having a trained, dedicated, committed workforce," said Cochran. On Thursday, the Reno fire chief unveiled his group's 2025 annual report. He detailed all kinds of figures about the department, including the over 150 personnel provided to fires across the country and its 264 fire investigations, another all-time high for the department. Other Things To Know Biggest Little Spring Cleaning If you have large items you need to get rid of during your spring cleaning, then make sure to bring them to a Biggest Little Spring Cleaning in your neighborhood! These free events are open to all Reno residents. Important: Only residential bulky waste will be accepted this spring. Unfortunately, due to the expense, we will NOT have electronic or hazardous waste disposal collection this season! The event will open at 9 a.m. and will continue until the Waste Management container bins are full (or 12 p.m. at the latest). The next one is in Ward 4 on Saturday, April 18, 2026 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at O'Brien Middle School. (Entrance on Siler Lake) Find more dates and a list of accepted items Small Walls Pilot Program This program is a creative placemaking and facade improvement initiative funded by the Reno Redevelopment Agency (RDA) and implemented in partnership with the City of Reno Arts & Culture Division. Applications are open now through April 10, 2026 for both businesses and artists. This pilot is designed to mitigate blight, enhance visual character, and activate public-facing spaces within Redevelopment Areas 1 and 2 through small-scale, high-impact artwork. The target wall size is 750-1,000 square feet and artists must apply to be part of the City’s artist-approved roster. Artists interested in applying can visit the City's artist application page. This program offers 50 percent matching reimbursement grants, up to $10,000 per project. Selected projects are required to remain in place and be maintained for a minimum of two years. All projects must comply with applicable City permitting and building code requirements. Businesses interested in having artwork applied to their property can apply through the RDA’s business application page. The Bottom Line Why Does Property Tax Matter? It’s the second‑largest revenue source for the Reno General Fund (FY26 budget: 29% of the total) and the largest for the Street Fund (FY26 budget: 71% of the total). It pays for vital services that residents rely on and deserve, such as police, fire, 9‑1‑1 dispatch, parks, business licensing, courts, roads, streetlights, traffic signals, snow removal, and more.
