Hello Reno, Spring has arrived in the Biggest Little City, bringing longer days, more sunshine, and a good reason to take stock of our spaces, inside and out! In this edition of the Reno Report, you'll hear more about the return of a few popular programs, one being the Biggest Little Spring Cleaning events that offer a free way to dispose of large, bulky items and keep our neighborhoods looking their best. The Reno Fire Department’s Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program is also making a return! This initiative provides temporary 30-yard dumpsters in select neighborhoods to help residents safely dispose of dry vegetation and green waste, reducing wildfire risk and supporting defensible space. We’re also asking for your input through a community survey to help guide these efforts. Applications are now open for the Small Walls Pilot Program. Funded by the Reno Redevelopment Agency and led by our Arts & Culture Division, this initiative supports small-scale, high-impact artwork in public-facing spaces in Redevelopment Areas 1 and 2. Both businesses and artists can apply through April 10, with matching grants up to $10,000 per project, helping bring creativity to our neighborhoods. You’ll also find a new entry in this report called The Bottom Line, where we break down where your sales tax dollars go and how the sales tax from a $100 purchase doesn’t all stay within the Biggest Little City. As always, there’s a lot happening across Reno, and this is just a snapshot. I encourage you to take a look through this edition and find a way to take part this spring! Construction crews have been renovating the building at 75 Cowan Drive since last September. The renovations focused on improvements to the interior and exterior of the building, including upgrades to the kitchen and restrooms, office renovations, new flooring, repainting, and exterior concrete patio improvements. The project cost approximately $900,000 and was funded through the Economic Development Initiative Community Project Funding Grant. The building can be booked for special events by calling (775) 334-2262. View Video (Via KTVN) Reno Fire Department Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program Survey The Reno Fire Department says it is planning to bring back the Home Wildfire Fuels Reduction Dumpster Program this year. That’s a program where Reno residents can dispose of vegetation like leaves and branches around their homes. Firefighters say this creates defensible space and makes it easier for them to protect against fires. Reno Fire, in an online post, says community members can access a free fuel reduction dumpster at Fire Station 11 after the program starts on April 24. The Reno Fire Department says they want to hear from neighbors before choosing other locations. You can suggest locations for the other dumpsters through this survey. The form is currently live and closes on April 1. Applications are open now through April 10, 2026 for both businesses and artists. This pilot is designed to mitigate blight, enhance visual character, and activate public-facing spaces within Redevelopment Areas 1 and 2 through small-scale, high-impact artwork. The target wall size is 750-1,000 square feet and artists must apply to be part of the City’s artist-approved roster. Artists interested in applying can visit the City's artist application page. This program offers 50 percent matching reimbursement grants, up to $10,000 per project. Selected projects are required to remain in place and be maintained for a minimum of two years. All projects must comply with applicable City permitting and building code requirements. Businesses interested in having artwork applied to their property can apply through the RDA’s business application page. The Bottom Line Where does my sales tax go? Not all sales tax collected in Reno goes to the City of Reno. When you buy something in Washoe County, the total sales tax rate is 8.265% per $100. This means when you spend $100 on taxable items, you pay $8.27 in sales tax. That sales tax does not all stay in Reno. In fact, it is shared among many agencies at the state and local levels.
