Proposed Sewer Rate Increase

City of Reno Seeks Input on Proposed Rate Increase for Sewer Service and Expansion of Sewer Utility Assistance Program The City of Reno conducts a sewer rate sufficiency analysis every two years to make sure the fees will cover the costs of operating and maintaining the municipal sewer system. The latest analysis recommends an 8 percent sewer rate increase for two years due to rising capital improvement and treatment costs. The study shows the need for a rate increase to ensure the City’s sewer system and related infrastructure continue to operate reliably, safely, and efficiently. The proposed 8 percent increase would go into effect on October 1, 2025, and a second rate increase of 8 percent would go into effect the following year in October 2026. Despite efforts to reduce expenses, including cuts to stormwater maintenance and the sewer capital improvement programs, a rate adjustment is necessary to maintain the City’s critical sewer infrastructure, address rising operational and construction costs, fund critical capital improvement projects, and comply with state and federal environmental regulations. The City of Reno is providing a variety of ways that residents can provide their input, which includes submitting feedback on the City’s Engage Page. There will also be a public community meeting on June 12, 2025 at 6 p.m. at Reno City Hall with a virtual option available. All sewer customers will receive information in their May sewer bills about the proposal and feedback opportunities. The City currently offers a sewer utility assistance program to assist low-income residents and is looking to add additional eligibility criteria of SNAP benefits as part of this process to expand the program. To learn about opportunities to provide feedback and more information on eligibility criteria for the sewer utility assistance program, visit the City’s Engage Page. Submit your feedback!
