Senior Connect - December
View as Webpage December 11, 2023 Reno Connect | Senior Connect Connecting Citizens to our Community December Updates Happy Holidays! The City of Reno would like to wish everyone a safe and jolly holiday season. The holiday season is a unique and cherished time, yet statistics show that people face potential risks of criminal activity. Additionally, for some individuals, the holidays can pose emotional challenges. Remember to check in with your family and friends and be kind to one another. Here are some tips to make your holidays safe and happy. Driving/Parking: Keep all vehicle doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your vehicle. Park in well lit areas. Do not leave gifts or other valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Shopping: Carry your wallet in your front pants pocket or your purse securely around your shoulder. Be aware of your surroundings. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Take only the cash you need or pay with a credit or ATM card; carry only as many cards as you will need. Protect your PIN from the view of other people at the ATM. At Home: Be aware that criminals may pose as couriers delivering gifts to case your home or to commit a crime. Be aware of telephone marketing scams that criminals commit to take advantage of people's generosity during the holidays. They should be able to provide you information to validate who they are to see if they are legitimate. If you are leaving your home for extended time, ask a neighbor or a friend to watch your home while you are away. Place lights, radios, televisions on timers so that your home appears occupied. Avoid having large display of gifts from windows or doors. Lock your windows and doors even when you leave for a short period of time.
