Hi Reno, If it feels like the community calendar suddenly filled up overnight, you're not imagining it! Summer has a way of doing that in Reno. The river is busy, neighborhood events are popping up across the City, and there always seems to be something going on. Before we dive in, I want to congratulate Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino on his recent appointment. Having grown up in Reno, Chief Solferino knows this community well and brings a strong commitment to serving its residents. To learn more about his background and vision for the future of the Reno Police Department, be sure to check out the newest episode of "On the Agenda," available now wherever you listen to podcasts. This edition of the Reno Report is packed with ways to get out and enjoy the season. You'll find information on the upcoming Valley Wood Park Gardens tour, as well as the return of some new favorite summer traditions, including House by the River, Harmony on the River, the Reno Antique Faire, and OffBeat Music Festival. If you've been thinking about joining the Fourth of July festivities, there's still time to sign up for the “4th on Fourth“ parade or explore sponsorship opportunities to help support this community celebration. The participant entry fee is just $25 and FREE for schools and non-profit youth groups! You'll also notice that City Council is heading into a busy two-week stretch. This week's meeting and the next Council meeting are back-to-back before we pause council meetings for the summer. While there may be a brief pause in Council meetings, there is no pause in the work happening across the City. Our teams will continue delivering services, responding to constituent requests, and working every day to make Reno an even better place to live, work, and play. Thank you for staying engaged, and I hope you get to enjoy everything summer has to offer! Jackie Bryant City Manager, City of Reno Is there something specific you'd like to see in this newsletter? In a Facebook post, the City says that while the package says they are flushable, they do not dissolve. They say the wipes do not break down in the same way as toilet paper does, and will clog pipes, pumps and lift stations, creating giant tangled masses crews will need to remove by hand. Did you know that not every City project is funded by local taxes? Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding is a federal resource that helps support neighborhood improvements, accessibility upgrades, housing programs, and community services that benefit Reno residents. We have more CDBG projects coming up, but in the past 12 months, CDBG funds have helped Reno build: School Zone Flashing Beacons ($700,000): Funds replacement/upgrade of school zone flashing beacons at seven identified schools to improve safety in school travel areas. The project focuses on traffic safety improvements that support safer crossings and driver awareness. Wilkinson Park Playground Replacement ($666,725): Replaces an approximately 8,000 SF playground at Wilkinson Park that is more than 23 years old and beyond its service life. The work modernizes the play area to improve safety and usability for the community. Wilkinson Park Dog Park ($330,000): Built a new dog park with separate fenced areas for large and small dogs. The design includes ADA-accessible features to improve access for all users. Canyon Creek Park Pathway Resurfacing ($165,000): Resurfaces about 10,000 SF of damaged asphalt pathways affected by cracking and tree-root uplift. The project improves pedestrian comfort, accessibility, and overall park circulation. California Building Kitchen & ADA Upgrade ($150,000): Renovates the California Building kitchen and adds an ADA-accessible bathroom. The upgrades improve functionality of the facility and accessibility for visitors and program users. Audible Pedestrian Signals ($100,000): Installs/expands audible pedestrian signals at signalized intersections to assist with directional orientation for people with visual impairments. The project improves accessibility and safety for pedestrians who rely on audible crossing cues. By leveraging outside funding sources like CDBG, the City can invest in important projects and services while helping reduce pressure on the General Fund. It's one of the many ways we work to stretch local dollars further to deliver value for our community.
