Hello neighbors, I hope you’re enjoying these longer days and the steady shift into spring here in the Biggest Little City! Like many of you, I’m keeping an eye on the weather and hoping we’re past those surprise cold snaps. I’ve been eager to get out in the garden, and I know I’m not alone! First off, every two years, the Reno City Charter Committee takes a fresh look at the Reno City Charter, our City’s guiding document that lays out how government is structured, defines divisions of powers and authorities, and helps ensure our municipal government runs smoothly. Think of it as Reno’s manual for good governance. The committee reviews ideas, talks through pros and cons, and recommends updates to keep our Charter clear, effective, and reflective of the community’s needs.  This work is happening now. If you’re interested in how your local government runs, or you have thoughts to share, I encourage you to follow along, attend meetings, and be part of the conversation. You can find meeting details at Reno.Gov/Meetings. In this edition of the Reno Report, you’ll find details on our Biggest Little Spring Cleaning events. These are great opportunities to dispose of bulky household items at no cost. This spring, events will be limited to residential bulky waste only. Due to the expense, we will not be offering electronic or hazardous waste disposal this season. Each event opens at 9 a.m. and runs until the bins are full, or 12 p.m. at the latest, so plan ahead! And with May just around the corner, we’re looking forward to celebrating Older Americans Month. We have a full lineup of free activities planned, including ice cream socials, a senior art show, Senior Day at the National Automobile Museum, art classes, and more. Listen on Spotify Listen on Apple Podcasts City Updates City of Reno organizing fundraiser to rebuild shelter destroyed by arson The City of Reno, as well as other local agencies, is organizing a fundraiser to rebuild the Sierra Vista Park shelter after it was burned to the ground in an arson. The city is looking to raise $250,000 to rebuild the shelter, which was destroyed in November of 2024. The shelter had been used by families, hikers, mountain bikers, and as a central gathering for outdoor recreation. Once funded, the new shelter will feature a steel frame, fire-resistant roofing, and a concrete foundation. Read More (Via KOLO) City of Reno is looking for new lifeguards heading into the summer season They are looking for people who can work as lifeguards in a window between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Applicants must be at least 15 years old. Benefits include flexible scheduling, incentive pay, lifeguard training and certification paid by the City, and a Reconnect Membership If you are looking to work in a fun atmosphere with great co-workers, the City of Reno will be that place! Other Things To Know Biggest Little Spring Cleaning If you have large items you need to get rid of during your spring cleaning, then make sure to bring them to a Biggest Little Spring Cleaning in your neighborhood! These free events are open to all Reno residents. Important: Only residential bulky waste will be accepted this spring. Unfortunately, due to the expense, we will NOT have electronic or hazardous waste disposal collection this season! The event will open at 9 a.m. and will continue until the Waste Management container bins are full (or 12 p.m. at the latest). The next one is in Ward 5 on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Melton Elementary (Entrance on Archimedes Ln.) Property taxes are distributed among the State, Washoe County, the Washoe County School District, and the City of Reno to support a wide range of state and local services.
