View as Webpage April 3, 2024 Reno Connect | Senior Connect Connecting Citizens to our Community April 2024 Updates The Reno Seniors EngAGED initiative is a series of engaging events that includes resource fairs, informative guest speaker sessions, technology classes, and more for older adults. You’re invited to join the following events! City of Reno Senior Citizen Advisory Committee (SCAC) Meeting: Join fellow neighbors and friends at the next SCAC meeting. Public information can be found at the City of Reno website. Tuesday, April 9, at 2pm. Located at McKinley Arts and Culture Center, Board Room.(925 Riverside Dr.) Free Poetry Workshops for Seniors: Free poetry workshops sponsored by the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, for seniors to unleash their creativity, discuss poetry and share your thoughts with each other! Second Monday of the Month from 1pm-2pm. Next class is scheduled for April 8, 2024. Washoe County Senior Center, Conference Room (1155 Ninth St) Free Outing to the Nevada Humane Society - Join us for a senior-focused field trip to the animal shelter. Seniors will have the unique opportunity to connect with seasoned dogs and cats, offering mutual companionship and joy. Come join us in providing pets with the loving retirement they deserve, and perhaps find a loyal friend to share your golden years with. Limited capacity, kindly fill out this form. Reno NV, 89502 Grow Your Own Microgreens Workshop - Join us for an interactive workshop where seniors will learn how to grow their own microgreens. Learn hands-on techniques to cultivate fresh microgreens at home with expert guidance. Sunday, April 14 from 2pm-3:30pm Reno Food Systems Park Farm - 3295 Mayberry Dr. Free Nutrition/Cooking Classes for Seniors: Healthy Starts at Home Learn how to cook and meal prep healthy, delicious snacks and meals at home. April 22 from 12pm-2pm at Paradise Park Activity Center. (2745 Elementary Dr.) April 24 from 12pm-2pm at Neil Road Multipurpose Room (3295 Neil Rd.) Limited capacity, kindly fill out this form. All events are free of charge, and we encourage to invite to your friends! Older Americans Month May is fast approaching, which means Older Americans Month is right around the corner. Check out this calendar of events! Senior Art Show - Individuals age 60 and older are invited to submit two entries for the Senior Art Show on April 16 and 17, at McKinley Arts & Culture Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gallery space is programmed for the public and all artwork must be appropriate for this setting. All types of artistic media will be considered for display. The gallery is best suited for two-dimensional works (no larger than 24 in width and 10 pound max) and small three-dimensional works (no larger than 17 x 17 inch base) that can be placed on pedestals. Paintings, photography, drawings, or prints must be framed with a back wire. Should you have any questions about how to wire your art, check out this step-by-step how-to with photos. The exhibit will be on display and open to the public from April 22 to June 7, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the McKinley East and the West Gallery at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center (925 Riverside Dr), with an artist reception held on May 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information regarding Older Americans, visit reno.gov/seniors for descriptions of each event. AARP is offering free tax assistance for older adults from February 6 - April 14, 2024 in various locations. Reservations are required. Check out this document for more details! Pioneer Center Golden Encore is a new lifelong learning entertainment program tailor made for seniors. Live performances take place in venues across Washoe County and admission is free. Open Door Café is open to all featuring Pioneer Center Golden Encore performance, with Scot Marshall and In-Tune Tales who will present All About That Bass at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center on Tuesday, April 9 from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM, including time for food, drinks, socialization, and more prizes! Dementia Friendly Community Group Meetings – Every first Thursday of the month at Evelyn Mount Northeast Community Center at 1pm-2:30pm. The next meeting is scheduled for April 4th from 1pm-2:30pm.
